Senior Safety Manager

City: Calgary / State: Alberta                                                   


At EVRAZ North America, we manufacture engineered steel products for rail, energy and industrial end markets at six production sites located in the USA (Portland, Oregon; Pueblo, Colorado) and Canada (Regina, Saskatchewan; Calgary, Camrose and Red Deer, Alberta). We are the largest North American producer by volume in the rail and large diameter pipe markets, and we hold leading positions in the Western Canada oil country tubular goods, small diameter pipe and West Coast plate markets.

 

 



Job Description and Responsibilities

 

We are seeking a Senior Safety Manager to join our team. In this role, this individual will identify, develop and implement programs and activities necessary to prevent incidents likely to result in personal injuries or property damage. This person will maintain compliance with applicable laws and regulations and direct loss control functions through sound security practices and effective claims management.

  • Assist with writing standards, training requirements, monitoring/auditing elements and corrective action steps as outlined in the safety management system
  • Represent the Company in loss prevention and claims management activities with workers compensation boards and general liability insurance carriers
  • Assist with Industrial Hygiene related programs and upgrade with continuous improvement as the objective. Programs include but are not limited to Hearing Conservation, Radiation Safety, Respiratory Protection, Heat Stress, and Drug Free Workplace, among others
  • Maintain effective standardized tools to monitor the success of safety management systems and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Provide leadership and guidance to operations in the performance of safety management requirements including incident investigation, safety training and communications, inspection and auditing, hazard assessment, and implementation of site business safety plans
  • Manage compliance with the Contractor Safety Policy
  • Provide direction and support to the facility joint union and management safety committee. Provide oversight and direction to union safety representatives on safety policies and technical safety issues
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the contract security service and assigned support staff, and union safety representative
  • Coordinate with the Regina based medical staff on issues relative to operations
  • Coordinate and participate in safety committee meetings
  • Plan and coordinate safety training, including new hire orientation
  • Supervise, coordinate and conduct plant compliance audits and physical inspections
  • Work with facility Human Resource Department to manage the EVRAZ Safety Accountability Policy
  • Maintain records and documentation required by national or provincial regulations
  • Evaluate, specify and audit the proper application of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Maintain and update as needed existing cardinal safety programs including: Fall Protection, Mobile Equipment Operation, Lockout/Tag out/Tryout, Crane Operations, Confined Space Entry, and Electrical Safety
  • Attend professional training classes and periodic business association meetings
  • Conduct and supervise incident investigations
  • Track completion of corrective actions identified through audits or investigations
  • Directly interact with the Plant Operations Managers and Senior Management staff members in the determination of loss prevention objectives and the development of objective attainment plans
  • Manage 16 recycling locations in the US and Canada



 



Job Requirements

 

  • B.S. in Safety, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Human Resource Management or related field
  • 5 - 10 years of experience in managing a comprehensive loss prevention/control program
  • Experiences in Workers Compensation Claims Management
  • Computer literacy, particularly with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to affect positive behavior in others
  • Experience in heavy manufacturing (specifically steel making)
  • Professional certification
  • Experience in Safety Management Systems and Risk Assessment
  • Candidates are required to travel throughout North America 70% of the time
