Job Description and Responsibilities

 

We are seeking a Senior Metallurgical Engineer to join our growing manufacturing management team in Regina. This management role will lead the Quality Assurance (QA) and Technical Services Group. The successful candidate will interact with the mill QA teams and operations departments on a routine basis to ensure that a high quality product is produced as efficiently and safely as possible.

Responsibilities

  • Manage manufacturing specifications, product inspection and testing activities, product development, product claims management, and quality systems
  • Oversee the maintenance and continual improvement of the Steel Quality Management System; work with QA team members to develop/improve new QA/Quality Control (QC) procedures as required
  • Interpret industry or customer standards/specifications and communicate inspection, testing or process requirements to QA/Operations teams and attend customer pre-production meetings
  • Develop best QA practices for steel making processes and improving customer satisfaction
  • Generate effective corrective actions for customer complaints and significant internal issues
  • Develop internal audit process for QC systems within the QA department; conduct audits routinely to determine QC effectiveness
  • Analyze trends for QA KPI’s such as rejects, rework, downgrades by mill, product; publish update reports monthly and provide analysis of the data with necessary action items; work with manufacturing team to improve trends
  • Support the Metallurgical Engineer by providing technical knowledge and guidance
  • Provide direction and supervision to the Quality Clerk
  • Conduct capability analysis for all products and process
  • Design experiments for all new products
  • Prepare reports on quality issues or concerns to inform senior management



 



Job Requirements

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgy or Material Science Engineering
  • 3-5 years of industry experience and a strong understanding of steel and pipe and/or steel mill processes and operations
  • Experience in QA and Technical Services environments
  • Thorough knowledge of industry standards including API, CSA, and ASTM
  • Solid understanding of ISO Quality standards and Quality Management Systems including quality control planning for new products
  • Certified and practical experience in quality auditing and reporting
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles
  • Demonstrated experience in applying root cause problem solving methods to manufacturing problems
  • Proficient with Minitab and MS Office tools such as MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent technical writing skills: producing technical reports, summarizing key findings and identifying next steps
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills: experience working with interdepartmental teams at all levels of management to accomplish tasks
  • Strong ability to work effectively with hourly and management ranks
