Job Description and Responsibilities

EVRAZ North America (NA) is seeking a Senior Director, Compensation and Benefits to lead our NA compensation and benefits strategy. Based in Chicago, this position is responsible for broad based and executive compensation programs, human resources (HR) systems, payroll administration and benefit plans including: health, defined benefit and defined contribution plans. This key management role requires a confident, hands-on leader with good executive presence and experience in mentoring and developing teams as well as experience being an agent of change and influencing. The incumbent will design, develop, implement, and maintain compensation, benefit and reward programs that are market competitive and meet organizational objectives.

  • Identify, source and implement effective employee benefits within company cost parameters
  • Oversee assets and costs valued over $1B for North American benefits and compensation plans.
  • Work in partnership with the parent HR organization and NA leadership, particularly regarding executive compensation matters
  • Develop and maintain compensation programs including executive compensation, broad based pay, and other reward programs. Lead upcoming project to implement and revise grading structure to be one North American structure
  • Manage retirement programs including participation in the investment committee and lead the retirement administrative committee.  Lead upcoming project to transition the administrator of the US retirement plans
  • Oversee payroll function including development of policies and procedures, management of systems and providers
  • Manage Human Resources Information System (HRIS) and timekeeping systems including upgrades, implementations, and monitoring effectiveness and costs
  • Develop long-term strategies based on program utilization, costs, effectiveness, and cultural readiness
  • Provide strong vendor management and oversight to third party administrators, actuaries, consultants, and vendors
  • Ensure compliance across all areas (including regulatory filings) and stays abreast of new risks, legislative changes
  • Collaborate with HR and direct performance management activities throughout the year
  • Perform due diligence on mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and impact on compensation and benefits resulting from other business transactions
  • Monitor trends and introduce best practices for programs to company
  • Select, manage, and develop a high performing team



Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, Finance, Mathematics or related area
  • Certification in compensation and/or benefits, preferred
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive Compensation and Benefits management experience in a medium-sized organization
  • Experience working in a manufacturing organization with unions is required
  • Prior experience leading company-wide implementations
  • Proven strong human resources leader with knowledge of current best practices in compensation and benefits
  • Demonstrated experience developing strategies, managing implementations, driving and leading change, maintaining strong vendor relations, as well as the ability to understand cost and contract language
  • Good analytical skills with the ability to audit and interpret data and make sound decisions are also essential
  • Must have exceptional skills at prioritization and multi-tasking while identifying where to lead and where to be directly involved
  • Strategic, hands-on pragmatic approach to issues. Able to analyze and provide the right level of attention and detail
  • Knowledge of governmental regulations related to compensation, benefits, payroll such as: 409A, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Consolidate Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), Employment Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Health Care Reform in US; familiarity with similar Canadian regulations preferred
  • Canadian payroll and benefits experience highly desired
  • Must be able to influence and collaborate across locations, functions, and across all employee levels
