Research Engineer

City: Regina / State: Saskatchewan                                                   


At EVRAZ North America, we manufacture engineered steel products for rail, energy and industrial end markets at six production sites located in the USA (Portland, Oregon; Pueblo, Colorado) and Canada (Regina, Saskatchewan; Calgary, Camrose and Red Deer, Alberta). We are the largest North American producer by volume in the rail and large diameter pipe markets, and we hold leading positions in the Western Canada oil country tubular goods, small diameter pipe and West Coast plate markets.

 

 



Job Description and Responsibilities

 

EVRAZ’s Research and Development (R&D) team is seeking a highly qualified Research Engineer to focus on our tubular and flat product development research. In this technically challenging position you will apply a knowledge of steelmaking, physical metallurgy and pipe forming operations to lead the development and optimization of steel chemistry and rolling practices to meet Canadian Standards Association (CSA), American Petroleum Institute (API), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and other specifications.  

  • Direct and coordinate development projects pertaining to the production and processing of hot rolled steels and heat treated products for tubular and other flat applications
  • Interact with tubular and flat divisions to establish product development priorities
  • Arrange and coordinate trials in EVRAZ and partner steel facilities and track production through pipe and plate mills
  • Ensure necessary data is collected to assess performance and oversee analysis of results
  • Provide work direction and training to laboratory staff performing metallurgical material assessments
  • Communicate results and recommend further actions



 



Job Requirements

 

  • M.Sc. in Metallurgical or Materials Engineering, preference will be given to candidates with Ph.D. and strong knowledge of steel physical metallurgy and mechanical property assessment
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant industrial or research experience
  • General knowledge of steelmaking, hot rolling practices and pipe forming technology
  • Experience with advanced materials characterization techniques and equipment
  • Familiarity of tubular and flat grades, an asset
  • Proficient in verbal and written English, exhibit good presentation skills
  • Knowledge of data acquisition systems
  • Experience with thermal-mechanical modeling of processes and systems
  • Experience with statistical experimental design and analysis is beneficial
  • Travel to EVRAZ facilities and partners outside of Regina will be expected and the ability to freely travel between US and Canada will be required
