Job Description and Responsibilities

 

We are seeking a Process Engineer to join our Red Deer Quality Assurance team. The successful candidate will conduct investigations into plant operations issues affecting hot rolled plate/coil yield, cost and product quality. The position also assists in the disposition of non-conforming product to ensure proper financial recovery. This role reports to the Quality Assurance Manager. 

  • Develop product capability studies of key process attributes related to pipe product performance
  • Create trending for process key performance indicators (KPIs) such as welding speed, power, etc. by mill/product to provide feedback to the operating team on what set points provide the best product quality, publish process KPI trend reports providing analysis of the data with necessary action items and work with operations/quality team to improve trends
  • Support Tubular Product Group product development activities when required
  • Lead brainstorming sessions such as A3 and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) with Operations and Quality personnel during the initial stages of the process control effort or efforts to improve the process
  • Conduct process optimization trials at tubular mills using statistical methods (Design of Experiments) as necessary
  • Support Senior Process Engineer, Quality Assurance and Operations teams to define the potential savings of process improvements on financial investments
  • Work with the Quality Assurance and Operations teams to ensure that shop floor documents and training identifies the features of process control of the primary process parameters
  • Perform process capability studies of the key process parameters on a quarterly basis and communicate the results to mill management as well as identify areas of improvement
  • Attend Six Sigma, lean manufacturing and process control equipment conferences to stay abreast of process control techniques and advancements in the broader steel manufacturing industry



 



Job Requirements

 

  • Bachelor of Engineering degree preferably in Metallurgical Engineering or Material Sciences
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in hot rolling of steel products
  • Well-developed problem solving skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build strong working relationships
  • Well-organized self-starter, capable of budgeting time to meet priorities while maintaining accuracy and functionality
  • Knowledge of hot rolling of steel and steel products
  • Ability to read and interpret American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards and customer specifications
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs
  • Provide support to a 24/7 rolling mill operation
  • Willingness to work in heat, humidity, fumes, odors, dust and noise
  • Six Sigma Black Belt, preferred
