Job Description and Responsibilities

 

EVRAZ North America is currently seeking a Metallurgical Manager for our Regina based Research & Development (R &D) Centre. This managerial role will provide guidance and direction to the R&D team as EVRAZ develops a full matrix structure in R&D and Product Development for EVRAZ’s steel making and processing operations. In this role you will offer technical support for new product development, test methods, material development and manufacturing operations. Other key responsibilities include: quality assurance, process improvement, supervising, monitoring and mentoring Research Engineers. You will demonstrate agility in guiding the team to respond to changing business strategies. You will report to the Director of Research and Development.

 

  • Manage the overall scientific and technical aspects of the metallurgy group
  • Provides advice and acts as the key interface between the R&D and the internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide support to North American teams, including advising on new product development efforts
  • Conceptualizes, prepares, executes and delivers short, medium and long-term metallurgy projects
  • Plans and manages product development initiatives/trials
  • Serves as a management team member and adviser to the Director
  • Contributes to the development/improvement of project and operational management tools
  • Establish priorities, review work and monitor progress to ensure optimal outcomes 
  • Support the strategic vision and leadership to shape processes and best practices for an agile workforce
  • Understand and demonstrate safe work practices at all times to ensure a safe work environment
  • Assist in hiring and training new department personnel
  • Promote a strong positive team spirit and work to develop a culture that is positive and rooted in respect as well as accountability
  • Provide coaching, development and mentorship for the metallurgy group project leaders
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures
  • Keep current on new developments in the area of steel making and forming
  • Monitor product development in compliance with established Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Develop and manage metallurgical operations and work practices that maximize operational efficiencies
  • Improve plant operating performance; reduce waste and delays; promote cost reductions; and achieve a high level of operating efficiency
  • Evaluate current and potential processing methods
  • Create and distribute monthly metallurgical and reports



 



Job Requirements

 

  • MS or PhD in Metallurgy
  • 10+ years of previous experience in product development in the areas of steel making and forming; extensive industry related R&D and innovation knowledge in the steel industry preferred
  • 5+ years of experience managing technical teams, R&D management preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to foster a collaborative team environment with cross-functional teams
  • Well-developed coaching and mentoring skills
  • Domestic and international regulatory experience
  • Ability to work with multi-functional teams and effectively interface with external partners
  • Project management experience
  • Proven ability to work independently and execute multiple projects in a timely manner
  • Exceptional problem solving, critical thinking and decision making abilities
  • Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Creative, highly motivated and self-starting
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
