Job Description and Responsibilities

Operate machine tools including but not limited to: lathes, milling machines, shapers, grinders, cutters, drill presses, hand tools in order to produce precision metal parts and meet precise specifications. Measure and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications using micrometers, gauges, calipers, etc.  Perform all preventative maintenance duties, routine inspections, and repairs to equipment.   Work well with other crafts to accomplish expectations of the Central Services shop.  Readily accept emergency repairs and demands.



Job Requirements

  • 5 years minimum machinist experience or machinist apprenticeship
  • Certificate or degree from an accredited technical college preferred
  • Ability to work primarily with all existing shop equipment, i.e. milling planers, radial arm drills, horizontal and vertical mills and lathes, key seater, burning machine, etc.
  • Ability to hold .001 tolerances
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn and accept changes in job duties
  • Ability to read and write safe job procedures, unfamiliar tasks, and hazard identification documents.
  • Understanding of and ability to practice LEAN methodologies including visual standard work and 6S.
  • Excellent problem solving, analytical, math and communication skills, some exposure to geometry, trigonometry preferred.
  • Able to work independently
  • Work well and consult with employees from other departments as needed
  • Set up and maintain machines and tooling
  • Have own machinists tools
  • Able to read and interpret drawings and sketches
  • Knowledge of and ability to use Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and a CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
  • Able to work in environment subject to fluctuations in heat, humidity, fumes, odors, dust and noise
  • Able to perform the physical requirements of the job (prolonged standing, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, squatting, bending, kneeling, climbing, work in awkward positions and tight areas, and lift up to 50 lbs.).
