Job Description and Responsibilities

 

We are currently seeking a Heavy Duty Mechanic to work in the EVRAZ Calgary Navajo Metals/Recycling facility. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Heavy Duty Mechanic will be performing routine repairs on Navajo Recycling Facility equipment and preventative maintenance (PM) on all heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for maintaining all mill equipment at the Calgary Navajo Metals/Recycling facility.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and diagnose different systems including but not limited to: ignition systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, transmissions, axles, suspensions, lighting systems, electrical and computer control systems.
  • Diagnose and repair all types of gas and diesel equipment including but not limited to: forklifts, wheel loaders, service trucks, pickups, dump trucks/trailers and other support equipment.
  • Maintain a tidy, clean, and organized shop and ensure a clean and safe working conditions at all times.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Operational Manager and Parts Manager.
  • Repair or replace defective parts, components and/or systems.
  • Assist the management team with planning projects, providing input and recommendations to safely initiate the most efficient and effective approach.
  • Keep Operational Manager and Parts Manager informed and updated about any orders placed, order status, and when parts shipments can be expected to arrive at the facility.
  • Test repaired equipment for proper performance and ensure that the work meets specifications and regulations.
  • Responsible for monitoring and inspecting equipment to avoid failures before they happen.
  • Understand monthly shred commitments to the Navajo Recycling Facility and have the ability to plan for required maintenance to avoid shortfalls in production.
  • Ability to understand the cost associated with a particular repair and the effect it has to the bottom line.
  • Perform safety inspections.
  • Notifies Yard Superintendent of any mechanical or repair issues.
  • Observes and follows all safety rules and regulations at the Navajo Metals Recycling Facility.
  • Has the ability to mentor fellow employees, sharing skill sets/knowledge and allow for input.

  • Minimum education level – Possesses an Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic Certificate.
  • Minimum 5 Years of experience in heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Experience repairing a variety of equipment and strong proficiency in reading and interpreting technical manuals relating to manufacturer specifications.
  • Knowledge in mobile equipment hydraulics, 12v and 24v electrical, diesel and gas combustion engines, transmissions, differentials, suspensions, air brakes, ECU and other computer systems.
  • Able to read work orders and technical manuals.
  • Preference will be given for candidates with experience operating Liebherr cranes (924, 934, 944) and Volvo 120 Front End Loaders in past work roles.
  • Independent worker/self-starter who thrives in an environment with minimal to limited supervision and has the ability to take action before being required to do so.
  • Experience in welding and fabrication will be considered an asset for this role.
  • Strong work ethic – uses time efficiently, works safely, and ensure everyone around him/her is working safely.
  • Strong problem solving skills with the ability to ‘think outside the box’ and come up with innovative solutions to issues.
  • Strong communication skills – communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, and over mobile radio devices.
  • Strong attention to detail with close visual attention for sustained/long periods of time.
  • Team player – establishes trust with team members, stating clear expectations and recognizes group morale and acts to protect and/or build as required.
  • Able to walk, stand, stoop, kneel, bend at the waist and reach for extended periods of time on a daily basis.
  • Able to work in a heavy industrial environment subject to heat, humidity, fumes, odors, dust, coal, and noise.
  • Safety conscious and orientated.
  • Adaptable to change.
  • Comfortable working in all types of variable weather conditions.

Successful candidate will be asked to undergo an Alcohol & Drug test upon a conditional offer of employment being extended.
