Job Description and Responsibilities

 

We are currently seeking a scrap yard Excavator Operator to work in the EVRAZ Calgary Navajo Metals/Recycling facility. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the excavator operator will operate either a Leibher or CAT excavator and will be responsible for safely handling and transferring scrap metal material, as well as maintaining the yard. Previous mobile equipment will be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Checks condition of excavator and ensure fluids are topped and equipment is running as per normal requirements with no noticeable defects.
  • When working with other personnel, receives signals on movements to be made.
  • Operates electrical controls to govern direction and speed of movement of the excavator.
  • Responsible for safely transferring scrap metal material throughout the yard.
  • Responsible for loading scrap metal material onto loading trucks.
  • Unloading and positioning machinery.
  • Transferring miscellaneous materials in the building area.
  • Aware of warning signs/alarms within the interior cab of the excavator.
  • Notifies Yard Superintendent of full scrap car.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of any procedural abnormalities.
  • Keeps work area clean.
  • Observes and follows all safety rules and regulations.

  • Minimum education level – completion of High School or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 Year of experience operating an excavator or similar heavy motorized equipment.
  • Strong communication skills – communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, and over mobile radio devices.
  • Strong work ethic – uses time efficiently, works safely, and ensure everyone around him/her is working safely.
  • Excellent judgment as it pertains to the operation of powered heavy equipment.
  • Manual skill and comfort operating controls to control movement of machine.
  • Responsible for mechanically handling and transporting material in a safe manner, free from defect and damage.
  • Operates excavator, showing care for the equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail with close visual attention for sustained/long periods of time.
  • Safety conscious and orientated.
  • Comfortable working in all types of variable weather conditions.
  • Must be flexible to work 12 Hour Shifts on a Day and Night rotational shift basis.

Starting wage for the Excavator Operator is $20.25/Hour. This is a full-time permanent year round position that offers a full comprehensive benefit and pension package.
