Environmental Health and Safety Intern

City: Regina / State: Saskatchewan

Job Description and Responsibilities

 

We are seeking an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Intern for a 12 week placement at our Regina facility. The EHS Intern will be exposed to a wide range of EHS operations at a large manufacturing organization. Through job shadowing, the EHS Intern will be able to gain insight and provide feedback on an array of key processes. In addition, the EHS Intern will support the EVRAZ ESH department with of a variety of essential administrative tasks. This intern will support the EHS Senior Manager with daily EHS operations such as: boots on the ground safety monitoring, contractor audits, safety training and orientation and project work. The intern will also have the opportunity to assist with conducting research on pertinent topics to help the department continue to promote a positive and engaging safety culture. This position reports to the Senior Safety Manager.

  • Promote an incident-free work environment by observing and evaluating plant operations and where applicable, develop recommendations to safety, health and environmental issues
  • Recommend changes to work procedures, equipment in consultation with appropriate subject matter experts
  • Participate in process hazard analysis and/or pre-start up safety reviews to meet process safety management requirements
  • Recommends methods to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials
  • Conduct safety training or education programs and demonstrates the use of safety equipment including new employee EHS orientations
  • Gather data, analyze and present potential path forward for safety project related work
  • Facilitate and participate in Safety Committees
  • Maintains and presents safety performance records
  • Assist site leadership in developing a working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) regulations and assist site during inspections and investigations, providing local management with the expertise to interpret regulatory compliance issues
  • Complete audits and reports on department safety programs
  • Review written safety programs for effectiveness and compliance
  • Provide technical safety support to all department personnel
  • Assist in environmental issues and compliance, as needed



 



Job Requirements

 

  • Recent graduate or currently enrolled in an Occupational Health and Safety Practitioner program
  • Heavy Manufacturing experience in an industrial setting an asset
  • Mechanically inclined to review, comprehend and recommend effective solutions as they relate to safety and compliance issues
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Positive attitude with an ability to engage a diverse group of employees
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Access and Word
