Job Description and Responsibilities

 

EVRAZ NA is recruiting a Director, Quality Assurance for our Calgary Quality Assurance team. The successful candidate will provide oversight for product inspection and testing activities, product claims management and quality systems management for our Tubular Products Group (TPG). This position will interact with mid-level management, mill quality assurance teams and operations departments on a routine basis to ensure that a high quality product is produced as efficiently and safely as possible.   • Oversee the maintenance and continual improvement of the TPG Quality Management System
  • Collaborate with the mill QA Managers to develop/improve new QA/QC procedures
  • Interpret industry or customer standards/specifications and communicate inspection, testing or processing requirements to QA/Operations teams
  • Oversee the management of all TPG product test labs and associated lab personnel and develop best practices for testing methods for safety, efficiency and accuracy
  • Conduct appropriate training of lab and quality assurance personnel to ensure our personnel maintain a high standard as well as develop specific training programs in basic steelmaking, tubular processing (including problem solving/troubleshooting), NDT methods, gaging (including thread measurement) and product testing
  • Manage the development of effective corrective actions for customer complaints and significant internal quality issues, manage correction action tracking system and follow through to shop floor implementation/verification of new practices
  • Actively work to reduce product claims by following trends and developing appropriate root cause problem solving teams at the TPG mills
  • Monitor vendor claims (steel, threading, etc.), assemble summary information for vendor reporting (quarterly) and support technical meetings with major 3rd party vendors
  • Oversee inspection programs of supplied materials from third parties ensuring TPG mills have sufficient practices to verify the performance of vendor-supplied materials
  • Develop product capability studies of key customer attributes (OD size, mechanical properties, flash control, length, thread dimensions, etc. as defined by senior management) several times annually to identify deficiencies with respect to process capability
  • Develop the internal audit process for QC systems within TPG and conduct audits routinely to determine QC effectiveness
  • Develop trending for quality KPI’s such as rejects, rework, downgrades by mill, product, publish update reports monthly, provide analysis of the data with necessary action items and work with operations/quality team to improve trends
  • Work with Level 3 NDT personnel and Director, Technical Services to ensure EVRAZ NDT personnel training requirements are met for inspection personnel
  • Support TPG product development activities when required
  • Promote the continual education of our QA personnel by providing annual training programs in the areas of root cause analysis, statistical analysis of data, gage management, quality planning, etc.
  • Participate in Tubular business meetings (API, CSA, ASTM, etc.) when required



 



Job Requirements

 

  • Recognized Degree in Metallurgy or Mechanical Engineering
  • 5 years’ experience working as a Quality Assurance Manager with single or multi-site responsibility
  • Thorough knowledge of tubular industry standards including API, CSA, and ASTM
  • Technical understanding of NDT as it applies to steel or tubular manufacturing
  • Trained and certified in quality auditing, lead assessor status a plus
  • Must understand ISO Quality standards and Quality Management Systems including quality control planning for new products
  • Demonstrated experience in applying root cause problem solving methods (Ford 8D, Ishikawa diagrams, FMEA, etc.) to manufacturing problems
  • Experience managing departmental budgets
  • Adept at managing training programs for QA personnel
  • Proficient in MS Office (MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, delivering presentations to management, extensive experience writing technical reports summarizing key findings and identifying next steps
  • Strong ability to work with interdepartmental teams at all levels of management to accomplish tasks, building solid working relationships with hourly and management ranks
  • Knowledge of pipe and/or steel mill processes and operations a plus
  • Six Sigma green belt qualification a plus
