Job Description and Responsibilities

EVRAZ North America is one of the most diversified steel manufactures in North America; headquartered in Chicago, Illinois with manufacturing facilities in the United States and Canada. Our Portland branch primary product lines include steel plate, coiled steel, and large diameter pipe.

The primary role of the Chemist is to conduct steel chemistry testing. The Chemist Ensures that samples are prepared correctly, using various mechanical or chemical means, to fulfill sample requirements for the particular analysis. The Chemist prepares specimens for analysis, both chemical analysis and metallographic analysis.

  • Effluent analysis [water analysis] requiring reporting to regulatory agencies
  • Maintaining the wet lab, the ICP, OES and SEM
  • Product testing relating to OES analyses
  • Analysis of OES results to meet various industry and/or customer standards and specifications
  • Resolve/investigate incorrect product identity issues
  • Uploading of supplier chemistry data for purchased coils and slabs
  • HIC testing for tubular products, including equipment maintenance
  • Preparation of metallographic samples
  • Maintaining a 6S compliant laboratory [laboratories]
  • OES Proficiency Studies
  • Wet lab and ICP Proficiency Studies
  • Train new employees as it relates to OES operations and analyses versus industry / customer standards
  • Investigate and resolve system issues related to product sample scheduling
  • In charge of 6-S check off sheet
  • Perform daily Safety observation



Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • 3 – 5 years of experience with chemistry in an industrial environment
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Knowledge of ASTM,API,MIL,ABS and Lloyds testing requirements preferred
  • Must have a basic understanding of Optical Emission Spectroscopy. 
  • Ability to work with others, self-starter, ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Ability to read and follow procedures and technical manuals
  • Ability to think ahead and plan work in fast-paced setting
  • Ability to regularly lift up to 65 pounds
  • Good math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, accurate number identification
