We are the largest North American producer by volume in the rail and large diameter pipe markets, and we hold leading positions in the Western Canada oil country tubular goods, small diameter pipe and West Coast plate markets.

 

 



Job Description and Responsibilities

 

We are seeking a qualified Scrap Buyer to join our team in Calgary, Alberta. In this role, you will be responsible for sourcing and purchasing ferrous and non-ferrous scrap for our two processing facilities in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. You will coordinate selling and trading activities with the General Managers, production supervisors, mill buyers, as well as Transportation, Operations and Accounting personnel. This role reports to the General Manager of Navajo Shredder located in Calgary. The successful candidate will be a dynamic self-starter with the ability to initiate business, possess strong negotiating, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Advocate for safety as a top priority
  • Source and purchase all grades of ferrous and nonferrous scrap to supply processing facilities
  • Analyze material and freight costs to support targeted financial performance
  • Maintain quality standards, process claims and manage commercial disputes with suppliers
  • Manage deliveries and shipments with stakeholders, including railroads and trucking providers
  • Conduct market research and forecast material supply in support of our purchasing strategy
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with current and future suppliers
  • Coordinate travel and site visits to meet virtually and in person, as appropriate
  • Develop a thorough understanding of competitors to inform our business strategy



 



Job Requirements

 

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a metal manufacturing or industrial environment including at least 1 year in sales and marketing, procurement or customer service
  • Experience in purchasing, sales and marketing, or customer service preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field, a combination of experience and education will also be considered
  • Excellent customer service, communication, interpersonal skills and negotiation skills
  • High degree of initiative with a capacity to achieve goals under minimal supervision
  • Proven ability to function effectively as a strong member of a cross-functional team
  • Aptitude for solving complex problems while fostering team collaboration
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel and Word), Scrap Management software an asset
  • Frequent offsite travel required, estimated at 25%
