Job Description and Responsibilities

EVRAZ North America is looking for a Manager of Quality Assurance at our Portland location. The purpose of this position is to provide Quality Assurance oversight for the product inspection and testing activities, product claims management, and quality systems management for the Portland Spiral Mill. This position will interact with the mill quality assurance teams and operations departments on a routine basis to ensure that a high quality product is produced as efficiently and safely as possible.  This position will interact with mill personnel at all levels, but primary interactions will be with mill Quality Assurance team and mid-level management.  The person in this position will be involved in providing oversight and leading team-oriented problem solving efforts as opportunities present themselves.

  • Supervise/lead a team of approximately nine to thirteen individuals.
  • Communicates effectively and problem solves with numerous internal departments as well as Clients.
  • Oversee the maintenance and continual improvement of the Quality Management System. Work with the mill QA Managers to develop/improve new QA/QC procedures as required.
  • Interpret industry or customer standards/specifications and communicate inspection, testing or processing requirements to QA/Operations teams.
  • Oversees the management of process test lab and associated lab personnel (where applicable, hourly/salaried). Develops best practices involving testing methods for safety, efficiency and accuracy.
  • Conducts appropriate training of lab and quality assurance personnel to ensure our personnel maintain a high standard concerning job performance. Develops specific training programs in welding, forming (including problem solving/troubleshooting), NDT (non destructive testing) methods, inspection and product testing.
  • Manages the development of effective corrective actions for customer complaints and significant internal quality issues. Manages correction action tracking system. Follows through to shop floor implementation/verification of new practices.
  • Actively works to reduce product claims by following trends and developing appropriate root cause problem solving teams.
  • Monitors the vendor claims. Assemble summary information for vendor reporting.  Supports technical meetings with 3rd party inspectors.
  • Oversees inspection programs of supplied materials from third parties. Ensure sufficiency of practices to verify the performance of vendor-supplied materials.
  • Develops product capability studies of key customer attributes, big diameter ovality, mechanical properties, length, etc. to evaluate process capability
  • Develop internal audit process for QC systems. Conduct audits routinely to determine QC effectiveness.
  • Develops trending for quality KPI’s (key performance indicators) such as rejects, rework, downgrades by mill, product. Publishes update reports monthly and provides analysis of the data with necessary action items. Works with operations/quality team to improve trends.
  • Works with Level 3 NDT personnel and Director, Technical Services to ensure EVRAZ NDT personnel training requirements are met for inspection personnel.
  • Supports product development activities when required.
  • Promotes the continual education of our QA personnel by providing annual training programs in the areas of root cause analysis, statistical analysis of data, gage management, quality planning, etc.
  • Participates in tubular business meetings (API Application programming interface), CSA (Canadian Standards Association), ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), etc, when required.



Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy, Materials, Materials science or Engineering open to any engineering. 
  • Minimum seven years’ combined experience working within a Quality Assurance/Quality Control organization in either an inspection or supervisory capacity.
  • Preference will be given to someone from a manufacturing background.
  • Knowledge of pipe and /or steel mill processes and operations a plus.
  • Thorough knowledge of tubular industry standards including API, CSA, and ASTM.
  • Technical understanding of NDT as it applies to steel or tubular manufacturing.
  • ISO 9001 familiarity. 
  • Six Sigma green belt qualification a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in applying root cause problem solving methods (Ford 8D, Ishikawa diagrams, FMEA (failure mode & effects analysis, etc.) to manufacturing problems.
  • Experience in budget management at the department level.
  • Experience in managing QA personnel training programs
  • Capable of using MS Office tools such as MS Word, Excel, and Power point.
  • Experience giving presentations to management regarding project results.
  • Experience writing technical reports summarizing key findings and identifying next steps.
  • Experience working with interdepartmental teams at all levels of management and external clients to accomplish tasks.
  • Able to work effectively with hourly and management ranks.
  • Must understand ISO Quality standards and Quality Management Systems including quality control planning for new products.
  • Previous team leading experience
