Job Description and Responsibilities

We are currently seeking an Operations Manager to join our growing team.  The Operations Manager will be responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the Rolling Mill. Responsibilities will include: mentoring teams, training, directing and creating a culture of safety, quality and collaboration. You will also be responsible for creating and managing the mill budget, capital and operations planning, mill productivity, and managing a team of 60 plus people in a 24/7 shift operation.

  • Drive, safety, quality, and production objectives for the Rolling Mill
  • Supervise and coordinate process and material flow, employees and equipment used in hot steel rolling
  • Leader and technical resource for the department; understands and resolves quality and production issues related to manufacturing and associated processes; coordinates all Department activities including furnace reheating, coil/ plate rolling techniques, material inventory, and establishing and maintaining Rolling Mill Department best practices and International Standards Organization (ISO) compliance
  • Study production schedules and estimates worker/equipment hour requirements for completion of job assignments, meets production schedules; recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product; suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of rolling mill, department, or work crew
  • Collaborate with sales team to balance resources and schedules
  • Ensure employees receive all required training and are capable of performing job duties
  • Set up rotation schedules, arrange cross-training opportunities and assign duties; suggest, implement, train employees in changes to process specifications
  • Analyze and resolve work problems, or assist workers in solving work problems; initiate or suggest plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals
  • Lead in cost reduction and quality improvement efforts by taking ownership of continuous improvement programs/projects and quality metrics with the plant
  • Direct, train, coach, and assist employees in delivering performance objectives
  • Communicate, support and enforce company policies
  • Interview employees, evaluate performance, reward and discipline employees, address complaints and resolve problems
  • Lead the safety education and crew training



Job Requirements

  • Business or technical degree coupled with a minimum of 5 years’ steel rolling making methods and techniques to include: basic metallurgical knowledge and a broad rolling background or an equivalent combination of education and significant experience
  • 5+ years of experience in an operations leadership role
  • Must have experience in lean manufacturing and continuous improvement
  • Ability to create and lead a culture of safety
  • A proven track record of success in production management with strict adherence to safety regulations
  • Solid quantitative skills to understand operational financial performance and key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage change with the managerial courage of doing the right thing
  • Experience developing goals and performance improvement plans for staff
  • Previous experience working in a unionized environment, preferred
  • Very strong communication skills and the ability to manage upward and downward in the organization
  • Motivated self-starter who can effectively work under pressure and manage multiple priorities
