Job Description and Responsibilities

 

EVRAZ NA is seeking a Lab Supervisor for our Regina Tubular Quality Assurance Lab. The Lab Supervisor is responsible for leading a team of employees and to manage day to day activities within the product testing lab. The Lab Supervisor reports to the Quality Assurance Manager and oversees and coordinates various functions within product testing lab including the timely completion of testing requirements as per customer specification and collaborating with multiple departments in the timely delivery of required samples. In addition, the Lab Supervisor manages gauge calibration and control activities and works to minimize any non-conformance related to gauge performance. At times the Lab supervisor works closely with customer representatives to clarify any questions that may arise regarding testing techniques and results. The Lab Supervisor also schedules, directs and leads their crew to achieve/exceed daily testing requirement and releasing targets.

 

  • Lead a team of unionized skilled Lab Technicians and Machine Operators
  • Apply knowledge of steel welding, weld metallography and various destructive testing such as Tensile, Impact, Rockwell/Vickers hardness tests. Manage materials testing and work with the EVRAZ maintenance team to improve testing cycle time
  • Utilize measuring instruments such as Micrometers, Calipers, UT gauges, linear, diameter and perimeter measuring instruments and ensure calibrated gauging is available for inspection personnel during production
  • Prepare testing results, maintain records of equipment maintenance with a high degree of accuracy
  • Perform or coordinate training of lab employees in new procedures/techniques to keep pace with always changing customer, industry or best practice requirements
  • Coordinate with Operations, Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Control (QC), or the EVRAZ Research team to deliver the day to day requirements
  • Coordinate mill trials with Operations, QA and the Lab testing technicians
  • Identify the key process variables for the various tests performed at the lab and improve the processes by adopting process control procedures
  • Measure and improve performance throughput by various techniques such as team building, value stream mapping, time study etc.
  • Apply mechanical testing standards such as ASTM A370, E23, etc.
  • Apply knowledge of oil pipe inspection standards such as API 5L and CSA Z245.1 
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment by following standard Lean Manufacturing Methods such as 5S, Kaizen
  • Monitor and improve the performance of employees through collaboration with teams across the organization
  • Monitor testing backlogs on hourly basis and improve the pipe release rate
  • Maintain the Quality Management System pertaining to lab testing to reduce opportunities for non-conformance during external audits



 



Job Requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Metallurgy/Material Science Engineering with a minimum of five years of experience in the steel industry
  • Background in production or Quality Management is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated experience managing a workforce in a production or lab environment preferably in a unionized environment, 5 years' minimum
  • Hands on experience using metallographic equipment such as microscopes, sample preparation equipment, etc.
  • Proficient in MS Office tools such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience writing technical reports summarizing key findings and identifying next steps
  • Strong leadership skills with a proven ability to motivate and guide a team in the accomplishment of key performance indicators
